Who Knew?

Who knew? “A new study shows that those who can stand on one leg for 10 seconds have less risk of early death.” An article in the October 3rd Fargo Forum describes the One-Legged Stance Performance study which offers “a whole new way of looking at certain skills of physical function.” According to the research, “adults between ages 50 and 75 who could not do this (one-legged stance) faced twice the risk of early death over those who could.” The researchers make the point that in addition to aerobic fitness, flexibility, and strength, stability should be added as a fourth component of fitness.

“What’s important is how little exercise and training is required for people to not be frail….the main thing is to do something” to challenge our stability system. To take the stability test we are to be barefoot with our free foot tucked behind the calf of our standing leg and arms at our sides. Give it a try! (Even if you need to hold on to a chair with one hand, you are still improving your stability.) If you want to work on improving your level of stability, we have some classes for you! HELPERS offers several free classes for ages 55+ that focus on improving all four components of fitness. They are Low-impact Strength Training, Tai Chi Quan, Matter of Balance, and Grow Young Fitness. Consider joining us for fitness and fun! “Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength. Betty Friedan
