What is advanced care planning?

Helpers invites you to join us for a free informational event on advanced care planning. Come with your questions! Details below.

What is advanced care planning and why is it important? “Advance care planning means making decisions about the care you would want to receive if you become unable to speak for yourself. Once you have made these choices you can document those wishes in a health care directive. You are encouraged to discuss your choices with family, friends and health care providers.” (Source: MN Dept of Health)

Thinking about and talking about our health care wishes with our loved ones and health care providers is important, regardless of our age. Doing so helps us to ensure that we will receive the care that is consistent with our beliefs, values, and preferences. It lessens the stress on loved ones, improves satisfaction with care, and gives us control.
